AWKWARD ENDEAVORS - Directed by Derek Frey, Written by and Starring The Minor Prophets

AWKWARD ENDEAVORS Running Time: 8:42 Genre: Dramedy Fifteen years ago, The Minor Prophets and I convened to film our first collaboration, 4th and 99. It marked the beginning of a long and storied creative relationship. Today I’m proud to share our eighth effort, Awkward Endeavors. This short is based on a scene from a feature screenplay written by David Amadio, Gil Damon and Steve Kuzmick. Our original intent was to shoot the full-length film this past year, in and around our Delco roots, however the pandemic halted those plans. We opted for the next best thing and selected a sequence that showcased these lonely male leads and the bizarre relationships between them. A few special shout-outs – To Kathleen Kozak, for bringing the heart, soul and music to this project. To Nicole Py for joining the shoot after a last minute invitation, ensuring everyone looked fabulous. To Holly Kempf for her AMAZING poster design. And to Leah Gallo, for her patience through piano rehearsals with Des, filming in our home over the July 4th weekend, MULTIPLE viewings while in post-production and for your wonderful behind the scenes photography during the shoot (I’ll be posting photos in the coming days). The Minor Prophets and I are still eager to film the feature version of Awkward Endeavors, but until that day, I hope you enjoy this deep dish slice. I knew Trever was keen to have a music video for the song. I also understood that doing this song justice would be a huge undertaking, simply because of the epic feel that the track conveys. I wanted the video to match the richness, scale and emotion of the song, while also showcasing the incredible live talent that makes up this Big Island band. Planning the shoot for PANGEA began last August, with filming taking place over two nights at the University of Hawaii at Hilo in January. As with every shoot I’ve experienced in Hawaii, it was a complete blast of creativity and insanity, with so many memorable moments. I’ve been editing away steadily since February with things really coming together over the last month, strangely timed with the spectacular eruption of Kilauea. We rented a house on Kapoho Bay while on the Big Island for the Pangea shoot. That property was covered by lava in June. My previous project on the Big Island was the film GREEN LAKE. The lake was evaporated by Pele a week prior. I’m still trying to make sense of it all, and knowing the beauty that has been erased in Puna is much to bear. I do know that PANGEA was a labor of love and I can’t thank everyone enough for their hard work and dedication to this project. I hope this video serves as a positive distraction to the hardship and heartbreak many are experiencing on the Big Island. The Killers - HERE WITH ME - Behind the Scenes by Derek Frey

The making of HERE WITH ME - Behind The Scenes by Derek Frey. Song by The Killers. Released: 2013 Featuring Tim Burton, Craig Roberts, Winona Ryder and The Killers. Blackpool, a faded seaside town affectionately known to Brits as ‘the Vegas of the North’, is the unlikely location of the new Tim Burton-directed music video for The Killers. LBB’s Laura Swinton caught up with producers of the promo, Hannah Cooper and Derek Frey, to find out about working with Burton to bring his waxy, wonky love story to life. LBB> Why was Blackpool the perfect location for the video? DF> Tim selected Blackpool because it is a place very personal to his association with The Killers. He first saw the band perform live at the Blackpool Winter Garden in 2006. During that same visit he stopped by Louis Tussaud's Waxworks where he saw a wax figure of Winona Ryder. When the band approached him about ‘Here With Me’ it was an obvious choice of setting. LBB> The British seaside vibe seems quite removed from Tim’s typical ‘American Gothic’ flavour and also the source of inspiration, 1935 horror movie ‘Mad Love’ – how did you go about making Blackpool fit Tim’s world? DF> Blackpool actually has many traits that typify Tim's aesthetic. Most of his projects over the last ten years have been filmed in the UK, including Alice in Wonderland and Sweeney Todd, both of which are set in the UK and include seaside locations. Blackpool has a very non-descript, yet haunted feel. Filming in November provided a very desolate feel which heightened the emotional impact of the video. LBB> Who did you work with to design and create the wax models? DF> Tim's office turned to Legacy Effects (formerly the Stan Winston Studios) who provided a foam head of Winona created for the film Edward Scissorhands. The foam head was handed over to Krystan Mallet, who served as Prosthetics Makeup Supervisor on Dark Shadows. Time was very limited but Krystan and his team were able to create the highly detailed wax head and place it onto a mannequin body over a few days. LBB> Why was rising British actor Craig Roberts perfect for the role and what did he bring to the final project? DF> Tim reviewed available talent with his long-time casting director Susie Figgis. Although Tim was not familiar with Craig's work, his photo made an instant impression. Originally Tim considered the male lead to be an older character. As soon as Craig came into the picture, it was clear that working with someone younger was the way to go. Craig portrays the quintessential Tim Burton loner with ease and perfection. LBB> A night shot in the ‘Vegas of the North’ must have been pretty tricky – what was the most challenging aspect of the production? DF> The majority of night shooting was contained to the Blackpool Pleasure Beach which had closed for the season just a week prior to filming. This made the filming process relatively easy. The most challenging aspect of the production was the preparation time for the shoot. Things came together extremely quickly in the days leading up to the shoot and the limited time allotted to film made for a long couple of days and nights. HC> I agree with Derek, the biggest challenge was the short prep time. However the teams at The Pleasure Beach and Blackpool Tower were really helpful, as were those at Marketing Blackpool. I think we all appreciated what a great production this was to work on, and the whole team worked together to make it happen. LBB> It’s not the first time that th1ng and th2ng have collaborated with Tim Burton (e.g. title sequences for Dark Shadows, Sweeney Todd and more). How has that relationship evolved and why do you think you work so well together? HC> It’s an absolute pleasure for th1ng and th2ng to work with Tim and his team. I'd say the relationship has developed quite organically. We have expertise working in titles design and so we created some titles for Tim's films, but we also have expertise in music video production. When these skills were required, we were very happy to oblige. LBB> You also worked with Tom Bird - what was his contribution to the project? HC> Tom Bird, as Creative Director, for Universal and Mercury, was, without doubt, one of the lynch pins for me on this project. He worked incredibly hard, liaising between production, the record companies in the USA and the UK as well as the band and the management. As we mentioned, the prep time was very short, and without his energy, I am certain we would not have been in as good a position as we were. Tom fully understands and appreciates the production process. He also works with th2ng as a director, under the name Secret Agent. He and I have worked together on many projects, including shooting Tom Jones and the Gavin and Stacey cast in the actual Las Vegas for Comic Relief - a great experience!

I’ve known Trever since 2001, after watching his band, Technical Difficulties, perform in Hawaii. I introduced myself, and many music videos, films and adventures later, it’s a collaboration that continues to inspire me. Listening to the new album I found it to be a brilliant and sweeping journey through an array of musical genres. The track God Came ‘Round spawned an instant vision for a music video. Inventive lyrics involving aliens, ghosts and leprechauns encapsulated many of the paranormal elements I find fascinating and are commonplace in my creations. Deep Roy came to mind because I knew he had the range to play multiple characters. We met in 2001 on the set of Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes, where Deep played several simian roles. We last collaborated in 2012 on the award-winning Ballad of Sandeep. Considering Deep appeared in Star Trek, Star Wars, Doctor Who and played all 165 Oompa Loompas in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, I knew he was the man for the job. I expected logistics to pose a challenge with Deep in LA and me working on a project in London. However, the day after I conceived the idea, Deep emailed to let me know he would be in London for the summer. I asked if he would be up for being in the film and he responded with an immediate yes. In God Came ‘Round Deep’s roles requiring many costume changes – a Venetian rose seller, an alien invader, a ghost, a leprechaun and God. I thought it made perfect sense to have actress Aiko Horiuchi play the female lead, as I met her through Trever’s band when they played the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory premiere in London in 2005. (Aiko played the Tokyo Candy Shopkeeper and went on to play the terrifying Kayako in an installment of The Grudge.) Let’s say the opportunity to tell an unrequited love story between an Oompa Loompa and the Grudge was one I couldn’t miss. Filmed over one day and three nights around Camden Town, Primrose Hill and Belsize Park, God Came ‘Round was a blast to shoot. Everything went according to plan due to the cast and crew of creative friends. I owe Deep Roy an enormous amount of gratitude for being game for anything I threw at him or on him. A big thanks to Trever Veilleux for creating such a poetic song and allowing me the freedom to interpret God Came ‘Round. Enjoy!

GREEN LAKE - A Hawaiian Horror Directed by Derek Frey

Industry hasn’t destroyed all the sacred spaces in the world. In Hawai'i pockets of magic still exist. And so do those that protect them. GREEN LAKE draws inspiration not only from the beauty and mysticism of Hawaii, but also from B-horror/monster movies, The Twilight Zone and The X-Files. It's a micro-budget Creature from the Black Lagoon meets Picnic at Hanging Rock. DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT I am fascinated with the supernatural aspect to Hawai’i and the tales found in Glen Grant’s Obake Files. I also love horror films and in 2010 created a short on the Big Island: The Curse of the Sacred Stone. It was a horror/comedy that lightly depicted the implications of disturbing sacred land when an unsuspecting tourist removes a lava rock from a sacred site. I still felt the impulse to create more of a straightforward horror film on the Big Island. Since my first visit to Hawai'i in 2001, I had heard about Green Lake, an unspoiled fresh body of water located in a crater within a mountainous rainforest in Kapoho. Green Lake is the larger of only two lakes in Hawaii. Allegedly Jacques Cousteau conducted a diving expedition in the 1970’s and couldn’t find the bottom. We don’t know if this is true, but one thing is certain, the towering walls of the crater make the lake seem bottomless. Discussion of Green Lake is almost one of urban legend. The fact is many people who live in Hawai’i have never visited the lake, though the land manager is very inviting and enthusiastic about the lake and its surrounding land. My first visit to Green Lake, a few years ago, was incredibly inspiring. It’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been to. Accompanying that beauty is a deep and powerful mystical vibe. This place demands that you respect it and it feels like there are protective energies present. During that initial visit a group of us ventured onto the lake via a small paddleboat and our first jump into the water was met with excitement, exhilaration and downright fear. The water is dark and though we know there are no snakes or predators to fear in Hawai’i it certainly feels as though something lurks below. From that visit the seed for a film was firmly established and I returned the next year with the Green Lake script in hand. Thus began a grueling 9 day shoot, pulling upon friends from the Big Island to play the roles and double as crew. Our core group of 6 played multiple roles in front of and behind the camera, weathering the elements, without sleep to the point of exhaustion and mental breakdown - all for the sake of creating. Green Lake was my mini-Apocalypse Now. It was the most challenging shoot I’ve ever been part of but also the most rewarding and I’m so proud of the result. Green Lake is more than your typical horror film, it’s a warning to everyone that we must maintain our balance with and respect nature or face the consequences. A special mention must be expressed to the wonderful music that accompanies the film. Big Island bands Technical Difficulties and Delight Talkies provide songs written specifically for the film. Matthew Reid’s terrific original score is more than I could have ever hoped for. Enjoy the swim and remember “Horror Dwells Deep”! MOTEL PROVIDENCE - Directed by Derek Frey - Written by & Starring The Minor Prophets

MOTEL PROVIDENCE Running Time: 9 Minutes Genre: Dramedy Synopsis: A cheating counselor working out of a sleazy motel room tests the boundaries of his own advice after a client's startling revelation. Tagline: There is a guide in the affairs of men. Where the wandering eye comes to rest. Starring DAVID AMADIO, STEVE KUZMICK & GIL DAMON Directed by DEREK FREY Written by THE MINOR PROPHETS (DAVID AMADIO, STEVE KUZMICK & GIL DAMON) Featuring the Song: MY LOVE IT GROWS IN THE SUMMER by Klebe and Davis. Cinematography by DEREK FREY Edited by DEREK FREY MOTEL PROVIDENCE marks my fifth collaboration with Philadelphia's premiere comedy troupe, The Minor Prophets. Over the past seven years we've explored themes ranging from father and son strife, workplace outsourcing, cross labor line friendships and faux Americana patriotism. All of these subjects present a unique comedic spectrum of middle class life in the United States. The Minor Prophets and I agreed to shoot our latest new short film over the Easter holiday weekend in 2014. My visits to the Philadelphia suburbs, where I grew up, are usually limited to holidays, so we've learned to maximize the limited time we have to collaborate. When they sent me the script for MOTEL PROVIDENCE I found it a welcome change up on the heels of our award winning short, SKY BLUE COLLAR. SKY BLUE COLLAR was slight on dialogue, big on visual gags and accompanied by a pulse pounding soundtrack. MOTEL PROVIDENCE is quite the opposite - with plenty of dialogue to chew on, which necessitated a straightforward approach to capturing it. This was a new kind of challenge for me because of the subtle balance of the comedy. I was most excited about The Minor Prophets having the opportunity to really unleash their acting chops. The Minor Prophet filmography is full of colorful characters under the guise of makeup, wigs and wardrobe. In MOTEL PROVIDENCE we shed all of that but maintain the obscure social commentary one would expect from a Minor Prophets/Derek Frey production. The subject of adultery combined with solid performances, clean cinematography and slick editing places MOTEL PROVIDENCE firmly in the "dramedy" realm. It's a place The Minor Prophets and I spend most of our time and I hope you enjoy. The genesis: Motel Providence began as a live sketch entitled "The Cheating Counselor," which the Minor Prophets performed as part of their 2011 stage show Fade to Yellow. The sketch opens with a short commercial advertising the counselor's services, and concludes with a musical number, "Miles From Infidelity," a song written by the Prophets' alter egos, the Positive Dudes, and meant as a warm-hearted critique of the adultery industry. Because of its restless dialogue and heavier, more dramatic moments, "The Cheating Counselor" didn't generate big laughs, prompting the troupe to reconsider it as a short film, one in which they could slow the pace of conversation and rightly balance the humor with the heartache. After adding another page of dialogue to increase the tension, and revising the ending for a more visceral punchline, the Prophets had a script for Motel Providence—the first-ever film adaptation of one of their live bits. REVIEW by Vhairi Slaven of MOVIESCRAMBLE: Pennsylvianian Derek Frey more famous for producing Tim Burton movies collaborates here with the Minor Prophets, an award winning troupe of film makers, actors and musicians. Confident and assured, “Motel Providence” is a tongue in cheek skit. Festivals & Awards: Documentary, Short, Comedy ~ International Film Festival. VAMPIRES KISS & BLOOD INSIDE by Witching Hour, Directed by Derek Frey

Vampires Kiss & Blood Inside by Witching Hour Three young women conjure up a Vampiress Queen in an abandoned cemetery. Their naive deeds unleash a horrific series of events. Can townspeople aided by Van Helsing (Tim Burton) himself hault this evil before it spreads throughout all of Victorian England? Directed by Derek Frey Starring: Yusura Bush Watcher, Tim Burton, Valery Richardson, Sabrina Lecordier, Leah Gallo, Benoit Moranne, Malcolm Davis, Chris Nuttall, Aiko Horiuchi, Glen Mexted, Dave Dore, Holly Kempf Keller, Gary Keller, Jack Taylor, Kirsty Squibb, Malwina Suwinska. Edited by Derek Frey Cinematography by Derek Frey Director's Comments I always wanted to create a gothic, period piece Vampire film set to music and have been friends with UK based Goth-Rockers, Witching Hour for close to 8 years. We spoke frequently about working together but it wasn't until the release of there latest album, Raven, in 2011 that the time seemed ripe to create something. Witching Hour's music draws inspiration heavily from Hammers Horror films, of which I am a great fan. Pre-production began in October of 2011 with filming taking place in December. The approach was to create a short film, more than a music video. We were honored to have Tim Burton join the cast in a cameo as "Van Helsing". As another fan of Hammer Horror, I think he enjoyed walking in the footsteps of Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. REVIEW by Richard Trejo of Trulydisturbing.com: If you crave 80′s goth rock and love yourself some vampires then the next film is right up your alley. We started off Day 2 with one of the most unique horror shorts shot in two parts set to the music of UK Goth rockers Witching Hour. “VAMPIRES KISS/BLOOD INSIDE” is Produced and Directed By Derek Frey with a cast starring Yusura Bush Watcher, Valery Richardson, Sabrina Lecordier, Leah Gallo, Benoit Moranne, Chris Nuttall, Glen Mexted, Malcolm Davis, and Tim Burton as Van Helsing. That’s right folks the Edward Scissorhands man himself makes a cameo as the famous Vampire hunter. The film is shot as a music video with the music providing the pacing of the film. The film follows 3 women who wish to invoke the powers of the vampire goddess. I found the imagery to be almost dream-like heavily infused with the sexuality that vampires used to be associated with. With recent vampire adaptations falling short of portraying true vampire nature it is refreshing to see that Derek still respects the vampire genre and this film is a direct reflection of that. All the way till the very end of the film you are entertained and you’ll be left with the sultry tunes of Witching Hour for hours to come.
